What is all this?

First and foremost, it's home to an unusual story of goth noir horror. This particular story began life on Jay Devers' blog and was inspired by true events that started to unfold in autumn of 2004. It was originally title The Crow Speaks, but has since been retitled To Trip the Dark Horrific and is in its final stages of a full draft edit. It also heralded the first appearance of the Talking Crow, which was chosen for the web site's mascot. Although presently not online due to the rewrite, the story will be returning in spring of 2008. Okay... so you're telling a story. But what is it really? Fiction?

Well... sort of. It's difficult to explain. Suffice it to say we have a love of all things strange and unusual, and these events turned out to be a stepping stone into a rather bizarre tale. The majority of the situations, people and places are based on real ones. Some of the locations may even be known to folks familiar with the New England area (a few of which I would emphatically remind you that you're exploring at your own risk).

I'm not much for online novels, so what else do you have here?

We also feature reviews on all things off the beaten path as well as other fiction selections. The subjects include, but are not limited to: horror, occult, science fiction, fantasy, and a little bit of kung-fu thrown in for good measure (because kung-fu is just cool).

Any and all media is up for review. Books, movies, music, TV, video games, whatever... If it falls within our core subjects and deserves a look (or is assuredly worth steering clear of) we're going to keep you informed. Should you have an interest in these subjects, or just enjoy an entertaining read, please come on in and peruse the goods.

How often do you update?

Unfortunately we also have to keep real jobs so we can eat, sleep, and buy video games. So updates can be somewhat random, sort of like our paychecks. You can keep an eye on the home page, or subscribe to our RSS feed. We typically also update our MySpace blog when we post new items.

Can I contribute something to your site?

Of course, we're always after... er, fresh blood... If you have a similarly twisted sense of humor for the dark and evil side of life, enjoy all things geeky and off-beat, and are interested in contributing either reviews or fiction - then contact us.

You can reach The Talking Crow by emailing thecrow@talking-crow.com or by contacting us through our MySpace page.

So... who are you people anyway?

Okay, about the founding contributors:

Jay Devers - The original victim of the events that occured in The Crow Speaks, he is not presently hunted by the dark forces of the underworld (as far as he knows), nor is working in a comic book shop anymore. He is however an aspiring author who hopes to someday leave the doldrums of a normal job to write horror novels, scribe a few comic books, and maybe work with Joss Whedon.

He presently still haunts the Portland, Maine area protecting the innocent from the supernatural, and in a never-ending search for the meaning of life (not the Monty Python movie) and the perfect micro-brewed beer.

Lara Slowly - Raised by wolves for the first three years of her life in the shadows of the mountains of Wu Tai Shan, China, Slowly was found by monks and trained in the internal art of kung-fu and the external art of homemaking. Later, after tearful goodbyes, she went abroad as a teen lass for proper schooling and to complete her degree in English as a Rhodes Scholar. Slowly also played bass and toured world-wide with her punk band, Asian Nail Horror, where she met Jay and Maximilian at a discreet kick-boxing tournament in underground Hong Kong.

Lara has since retired from The Talking Crow, and now writes and raises wolves with her husband, Kevin, in Denver, Colorado.

Maximilian Devers - The estranged brother to Jay. A victim of various unusual events himself, he currently resides in an undisclosed location with many guns and a high speed internet connection. His time is spent crafting various edged weapons, attempting to harness the power of the sun, and preparing for the day the vampire communists attack. What day is this, you may be asking yourself? He's not sure. But rest assured, he will make known the dangers of vampire communists soon enough.

Max's present whereabouts and activities are currently unknown.

Are those your real names?

Years of fighting the dark forces of evil can make you a lot of nasty enemies. We could tell you who we really are, but then we'd have to kill you (actually we'd just send Maximilian after you). Thanks for visiting, and we hope you enjoy your stay at The Talking Crow.
